The Unit: 420 “Chaos Theory”

May 3rd, 2009 | Filed under Television, The Unit

Another week with no Charles, and Mack stays home. Our 3 story lines are (1) Jonas and Bob undertake a 2-man mission in Hong Kong, (2) Molly and Susan Gillum get kidnapped by the Leon Drake gang, and (3) Mack and Tiffy discover that their older daughter is dating an older man.

On that last story, not much of interest happens. The daughter is late, they track her down, and eventually find her at the apartment of a 21-year old.
Mack puts the fear of God and bullets into him, and that’s that. We don’t learn anything new about Mack’s pledge from last week, and nothing else really develops.

The Jonas and Bob operation starts in the episode opening, where we see Bob and Bridget (who is fully cleaned up with no bruises or scars from the attempted rape) planting the idea of an upcoming Falun Gong terrorist attack in Hong Kong. This is a bit nasty on our part, I think, because I believe the Falun Gong is not a terrorist group even though the Chinese government likes to call them one. Anyway, Those seeds eventually grow fruit for the Unit. Jonas and Bob break into the vault of a building in Hong Kong, steal some documents regarding advanced nuclear submarine technology in a briefcase, and then blow up the empty building to cover their theft. The problem is that the building manager left for work 8 minutes early, so they had to blow the building eralier than planned, and before Jonas and Bob make their escape. As a result, they end up trapped on a subway car while authorities investigate.
They try to make an alternate plan, but everything seems to work against them. Bob tries to take a picture of a wall marker to fix their position, and a man walks into the photo, notices, and freaks out over having his picture taken.

Jonas investigates the possibility of leaving the car and walking the tracks, and draws the attention of a police officer. They try to abandon the briefcase with the documents, and a friendly British couple return it to them. They bribe the police officer who is going to let them out the end of the train, when another officer notices, and applies an acupuncture cure to Bob’s faked diabetes. Eventually Bridget reaches out to the reporter with whom she planted the Falun Gong story weeks earlier. She convinces him to help Jonas and Bob, by promising him, something…

He sneaks Jonas a phone, and convinces the guards to let them through because they work with his news team. It also helps that Col. Ryan uses the photo of the crazy man that Bob took, quickly creates a Falun Gong profile for him, and sends it to Chinese authorities. The police notice him and he makes a run for it just as Jonas and Bob are slipping through the line. It isn’t clear to me if they are just using the poor man or if he was an asset helping them intentionally. Jonas says that Mr. Chu was very helpful, but when he says something like that it is hard to tell if he is being direct or sarcastic. I think he was an agent who helped them, but would be willing to consider alternative explanations.
As for Molly, she is with Susan when the latter receives a call from her husband Elliott. He wants to reunite, and tells her to go to his office where someone will give her a plane ticket. Molly tries to talk her out of it, but cannot. She volunteers to go with her to the office instead, after calling Ryan. She leaves him a voicemail that she will slip her cell phone into Susan’s bag to allow a trace on Elliott. When they get to the office, however, it is locked, and armed men force both women into a van. Susan still cannot make herself understand the danger, but Molly knows all too well what is happening and that she is trapped. After driving for long enough to become disoriented, they arrive to find Elliott, Leon Drake, some thugs, and … Sam, Whiplash.

Molly and Sam

Molly is more frightened than ever, Leon questions Elliott and Susan for a short time before executing them. Molly escapes, but can’t get anywhere before being recaptured. The episode ends on that cliffhanger, with Sam directing Molly to get into the trunk of a car that is lined with plastic.
Questions: Is Sam undercover? It appears not, especially based on the preview but it could be possible. Either way, how did he so quickly get into Drake’s gang? We know from Bridget having healed that it has been at least a few weeks, but still. He just left the Unit. Whether undercover or not, how and why would Drake ever trust him so readily? Which makes one wonder if was working for Drake all along, as implausible as that seems. This could be good, or it could be highly unbelievable, depending on how it plays out.
