Blogging the Unit

Nov 30th, 2008 | Filed under Reviews, Television, The Unit

In order to prod myself to write here a bit more regularly, I’m going to try regular episode blogging of one or more TV shows, starting with The Unit. This show is in its 4th season, and has never been a giant hit, but manages to get renewed every year so far.  Produced and sometimes written by David Mamet, the series is based upon the book Inside Delta Force by Eric L. Haney.

This season, the show was moved to Sundays at 10 pm, and given a strong lead-in from Cold Case Files, a popular show I happen not to watch, but which is meant, I understand, to give a boost to The Unit‘s ratings.

The show was also partially rebooted, with a change to a new location, a new female team member, and a more active role for the unit members’ wives.  The latter group has always been featured, but they never participated in Unit activities or operations in any way.  This season, they have been active participants while staying at home.

The new team member played by Nicole Steinwedell, was given the code name Red Cap, by team leader Jonas (Dennis Haysbert).

The nearly random, and completely off-hand basis for this nickname (she was wearing a red cap at the close of the first mission they worked on together and before she joined their group) provided the first indirect clue I’ve seen for the origin of the other team member’s code names.

Anyway, my intent is to pick up next week with Episode 10, “Mislead and Misguided.”
