Gonna make you love me before I’m done

Somehow I forgot about this song.  Back in college, in the early 80s, two of my friends introduced me to the Rubinoos, and I loved this song, but I never bought it.  I completely forgot about it until about 2 years ago, while surfing somewhere on line, I stumbled across a Rubinoos reference.  I immediately searched for and found a greatest hits album to buy online.  Last night on the way home from work my ipod played this song, I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend, and I was reminded of just what a wonderful confection of light, power pop goodness it is.

If I could stream the entire song legally I would.

Besides, well, just the whole thing, I love this bit of wordplay in the lyrics. Note the repetitive “I You Me” in the first three line, then how it gets echoed in the next three lines, while the words “see” and “smile” pick up the focused repetition.

I’m tempted to suggest that this sort of writing doesn’t happen by accident, but the Rubinoos would be one-hit wonders if this were a bigger hit.  They had a few other decent songs, but they never again rose anywhere near this level.

I – Am I just imagining
You – Or do You really have a thing for
Me
Like I think I see
When I see You Smile
And the smile’s for me
