Sharpie 500 2008 – Disappointing Loss for Kyle
This was frustrating. after leading for nearly the entire race, Kyle Busch was passed by Carl Edwards on Lap 470, with the help of a little nudge. After Kyle’s win at Watkins Glen, I went into each of the next two races thinking, “anybody but Edwards,” and Edwards ended up winning both, with Kyle in second each time with a chance to win. Edwards has clearly been the main competition for Busch this year, and has dominated ever since Nascar changed the rules midseason, and placed a specific horsepower handicap on Toyota cars only.
Bush League Nascar
Frankly, Edwards and the American auto industry should be embarassed that they had to resort to imposing a 15 horsepower handicap on Toyata cars to be able to compete with Kyle and the Japanese carmaker. Nascar comes out looking like a real bush league, too. You don’t change rules and impose a handicap midseason, and you don’t impose different rules on different teams or manufacturers. Toyota and Gibbs racing were working under the same specs and rules as everyone else, and did a better job. Everyone else should be forced to deal with it, learn, and improve their own products. Maybe now Gibbs and Kyle should whine about coming in second, and abou Edwards’s dominance, so Nascar can change the rules again.
The Bump
On the other hand, I don’t blame Edwards at all for the bump move he used to get Kyle Bush out of the way so Edwards could pass. That’s racing, and Kyle should just deal with it.
